Today is Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s 26th birthday. It’s also a fairly slow news day so I spent five minutes creating the above birthday collage – how amazingly tacky is that cake? The fashionable duo have had a great start to their 26th year, recently picking up the CFDA Award for Womenswear Designers of the Year. So celebrate their special day by ordering yourself a Starbucks Venti Latte and The Row’s £22,950 Alligator backback. Or simply just flick through the Mary-Kate and Ashley archives on Coco’s Tea Party instead…

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Skype Session Portrait

There must be zillions and trillions of photographs of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. They have been in showbusiness since they were babies, after all. But photographer Trey Laird managed to get one of the most unconventional and imtimate portraits of the famous sisters, shooting one of their daily Skype converstations for the CFDA Journal. It’s such a cool image, right?
And it turns out the shot was accidental, as Trey revealed, “Ashley got stuck in L.A. and couldn’t get back, and we really had to go to print, and I was really running out of time. Mary-Kate was here, and we were trying to figure out how we were going to do it. I know Mary-Kate and Ashley, and I wasn’t about to leave one of them out, so I really had to get creative.” 
So naturally they turned to Skype!
“Sometimes when you’re presented with these Über-challenges, like you’ve got one girl in L.A. and one girl in New York and you’re doing New York portraits, what do you do? Go! Sometimes it forces you to come up with ideas you wouldn’t have otherwise, and it’s actually one of people’s favorite pictures of the book. Because you’ve never really seen that picture of two sisters Skyping face to face. They do it many times a week.”
