Made in Africa: Suno and ASOS Africa

Ever since Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty launched Suno, back in A/W 2010 I have been a fan of their African-inspired colourful prints. Shockingly I think this is the first time I've given Suno a mention on Coco's Tea Party, but it's quietly slipped into my top ten favourite New York based labels.

The wonderful thing about Suno (apart from the fact the pieces are totally desirable and achingly cool) is that whilst the clothes are designed in NYC they're made in Kenya. Although I do believe - and correct me if I'm wrong - that Suno has also moved into India, for embroidery, now too.

ASOS Africa, which is now in its third season, also provides employment to communities in Kenya. And a percentage of the sales from the S/S 2011 ASOS Africa collection will go towards building a new workshop in Kenya.

Whilst Suno is still very much about bright colour and eye-catching prints, ASOS Africa has gone for a softer look this season. There is a focus on tailoring, with cropped jackets and pinafore dresses, but Kitenge prints from Tanzania do make an appearance too. The 20-piece S/S collection is now online.

I'm hoping to pull together some Suno-inspired looks when the temperatures really start to rise, and ASOS Africa is definitely worth investing in for easy-to-wear classics.

Are you a Suno/ASOS Africa fan? Do you own any of their pieces? And if so how do you wear them?

  1. I adore the maxi dress! It's amazing - aww, I'm in love. I'd wear it with flat sandals or chunky heels. Doesn't look gorgeous on Nicole Richie? Sure it does! Love xx
