Yes, it is that time of the year again. For those who stated reading Coco’s Tea Party this year you won’t be familiar with the 50 Best Dresses of the Year post. It’s pretty self explanatory, but each year in December I post a rundown of my favourite 50 red carpet looks. It’s celebrity only, so models and industry insiders won't pop up anywhere. I started work on this post in January and I hope you all enjoy it; although it’s based on my personal favourites I try to select dresses that everyone will like.
This year I’m splitting the post into four parts, this is mostly because I’ve changed the blog layout since last year, and it would be much too long to put them all in one post, but also it spreads out the fun. I’ve also invited a panel of four of my favourite bloggers to give their opinions on some of the dresses this year. I deliberately chose bloggers that rarely write about celebrities, so welcome DisneyRollerGirl, Stevie from Discotheque Confusion, Michelle from Who is Bobb Paris and Kate from Make Do Style. So without further ado here are dresses 50-36. As always share which looks are your favourite in the comments section, and keep an eye out for part two, which will be coming soon...
50. Emma Watson
Dressed in Burberry
“Watching Emma Watson's style evolution this year has been interesting and she's worn lots of lovely dresses by Christopher Kane, Burberry and Chanel. She looks completely beautiful and grown up in this Grecian cut she wore to the Met Gala. Just remember when she used to wear mohair boleros to Harry Potter premieres...” – Stevie, Discotheque Confusion
49. Kristen Davis
Dressed in vintage Balmain
48. Christina Aguilera
Dressed in Versace
I love Christina but I’m not usually into her red carpet style. So I was pleasantly surprised when she attended the Golden Globes in this Versace dress earlier in the year. Nude was the big trend over awards season in 2010, and Christina did well not to over-style this dramatic dress.
47. Kate Beckinsale
Dressed in Gucci Premiere
46. Rachel McAdams
Dressed in Alberta Ferretti
45. Diane Kruger
Dressed in Jason Wu
“I never usually get all the 'style icon' hoo ha about Diane. Yes, she's pretty but she doesn't make particularly daring outfit choices. This is a great look though - timeless, yet of the moment. Yellow ochre is a notoriously difficult colour to wear but it contrasts beautifully against Diane's pale skin and I do love an old-school train. Plus the easy up-do and scarlet lip are a stroke of genius.” – DisneyRollerGirl
44. Odette Yustman
Dressed in J.Mendel
43. Gwyneth Paltrow
Dressed in Atelier Versace
42. Angelina Jolie
Dressed in Emporio Armani
“When Angelina does the short black sparkly dress with nude shoes, she nukes every other female on the planet. In fairness the Armani dress is exquisitely cut with draping detail designed to flatter. The proportions of the dress are perfect, but am I only saying this because of Angelina? She is a clear case of Chanel’s famous view that the women should be considered beautiful, not the dress.” – Kate, Make Do Style
41. Diane Kruger
Dressed in Donna Karan
40. Chloe Sevigny
Dressed in Christian Lacriox
39. Naomi Watts
Dressed in Gucci Premiere
“At first I wanted to shout ''gimme some mo' '' in the spirit Busta Rhymes, but on careful consideration, I am appreciating what Naomi is doing here. Pink, strapless and unapologetically feminine. The geometric embellishments inject strength, and her loose curls keep the look from getting a little too beauty pageant. She confidently channels classic Hollywood with modern sophistication.” – Michelle from Who is Bobb Paris
38. Cate Blanchett
Dressed in Alexander McQueen
37. Camilla Belle
Dressed in Jason Wu
Camilla Belle always gets it right on the red carpet, but I haven’t posted about her much this year. However, this red Jason Wu dress, which she wore to the Met Gala, won't be her only appearance in the top 50. The bright colour looks stunning on Camilla, and she carries herself with such grace. She is a red carpet master…
36. Sandra Bullock
Dressed in Bottega Veneta
Keep your eyes pealed for part two of The 50 Best Dresses, which should be up next week. And let me know which dresses have been your favourites so far. Do you like the first 15 dresses?

the jason wu looks AMAZING on camilla belle. what a beauty.
ReplyDeletei struggled with gwyneth in the versace tho - i always have issues with cut-away detailing on long gowns.
looking forward to part two... =)
So many great picks here, I loved looking through. My favourites are Diana Kruger in ochre (I don't normally rate her style either), Kristin Davis, Sandra Bullock and Camilla Belle. Can you tell I like colour?
ReplyDeleteI really dislike the dress Gwyneth is wearing - cut outs can look so tacky.
ReplyDeleteThe LBD's are grabbing my attention for some reason. Angelina looks stunning as always but I really like Chloe Sevigny's dress.
adore ate guci suh an amazing dress
ReplyDeletesuch a shme you dont post also models, there where amazing dresses this year
I love all of your choices and i cant wait to see what dress gets the prize. Although i personally would have put Odette Yustman J.Mendel dress alittle higher.

Oh am torn between Naomi Watts in gucci and Cate in McQueen but of course Angelina is stunning!
ReplyDeleteRachel is my favourite here, that dress is stunning...or maybe it's a tie between her & Odette Yustman (that J Mendel gown is gorgeous - although I don't have a clue as to whom Odette is).
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the next few 'parts' to the 'countdown'.
xx
I'm torn between Naomi Watts and Kate Beckinsales Gucci dresses. GORGEOUS.
ReplyDeleteDiane Kruger is my fav.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the next installment- wanna see Kate Bosworth, The Olsens, Jennifer Aniston....
Kristen Davis's dress is way too shimmery and the shape doesn't flatter her body too much. And I'm not too in love with Diane Kruger's second dress: it highlights how unhealthily skinny she is.
ReplyDeleteOn the other side I LOVE Emma Watson's look. She's perfectly chic and incredibly sexy at the same time. Rachel McAdams looks like a Grecian godess and Odette Yustman makes her oufit extremely beautiful with that wonderful smile.
Can't wait for the other red carpet looks, I hope Rachel Bilson and Carey Mulligan are in it.
That Camille Belle number was one of my faves. It's just so elegant and the colour is perfect for her! Shame you can see her chicken fillets though.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think it is all to easy to get it wrong on the red carpet...the less stylish amongst the glitterati seem to slip up and end up looking like they're at a pageant but I think Camille nailed it.
For me Gwytheth Paltrows would have been much further up on the list. That dress on her was a shock because she's got a very straight up and down figure and the cutout made her look really classicly curvy. Like a bit of a Jessica Rabbit feel.. I did a double take when I first saw it before realising it was a cut-out. Clever dress. I also like the gradution into pink.
ReplyDeleteLove your choices so far!!!!!!

Naomi Watts and Sandra Bullock rock their dresses. They look absolutely stunning. They're my two favorite dresses so far...
ReplyDeleteim agreeing with pretty much all of them so far (although i would have put diane & odette in the mustardy colour further up the list - but thats just totally me) i personally wasnt a huge fan of cate's dress or kristins.
ReplyDeletecant wait for the next fifteeeen!!!!!x
Yay, I always loved this post and I'm very excited to see what else you pick! In truth, Emma and Diane in Jason Wu are two of my favourites of the year so I'm a little disappointed to see them so far down, but I'm sure they'll be some great ones in part two!

love the jason wu's on camilla belle and diane kruger. Also Love kate beckinsale in the gucci. :)
ReplyDeletei wander, i wonder
Ooh, love Chloe Sevigny and Camilla Belle's looks. Can't wait to see who tops the list!
ReplyDeleteJason Wu will be a legend.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is Kate Beckinsale : her dress is stunning!
ReplyDeleteI definitely feel like Emma Watson's burberry and Diane Kruger's mustard one should definitely be higher on the list. But these are all amazing choices so far!

Thanks and keep up the good work :)
I feel the Ateiler Versace dress Paltrow wears deserve some caption merit. She is pulling off a cut out, high slit and what seems to be a mixture between tye dye and just amazing fabric colouring without looking over the top, or like an overly zealous fashionista.
ReplyDeleteShe looks elegant, the material falls gracefully and the shoes blend so well with the gown unless you knew any better you'd be under the impression they were sold together.
She looks sensational and that dress is a breath of fresh air coming from Versace... of which I'm not too overly enthusiastic about.
No no no! I just don't understand the appeal of Angelina Jolie. Yes, she is hot. But her style is so blah! She dresses like she is going to a funeral all the time. Black and grey, conservative and boring, and the only nice thing about the dress here are the sequins. But all-over sequins are so over anyway!
ReplyDeletethanks for this wonderful post! I can't wait to see the nest one!!
ReplyDeleteNaomi Watts dress is really beautiful!!

I disagree about Angelina Jolie- she looks unattractively skinny in this dress and also looks uncomfortable, might just be that particular photo though. I also think its too short for her, mutton dresses as lamb?! Even though shes not that old she has a classic hollywood look that works better with more glamorous, sophisticated dresses.]
ReplyDeleteChloe is my favourite out of these, and also maybe Camilla Belle :)
I like each and everyone-save Kirsten Davis'
ReplyDeleteHow are you hun? It's been a while.
Camilla Belle in that Jason Wu looks stunning also Sandra Bullock in that Bottega Veneta buut I don't like that DK on Diane Kruger...

I love your choices :) most are really stunning dresses! I am in a four way tie, and can not decide my favourite out of Emma Watson in Burberry, Rachel McAdams in Alberta Ferretti, Diane Kruger in Jason Wu or Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen?! cant wait to see the restt!! x
