50 Best Dresses of 2009

The biggest post of the year is here - I've been working on it since January. If you're new to Coco's Tea Party the 50 Best Dresses of the year is simply a countdown of my favourite red carpet dresses. The list only includes celebrities and the dresses were all worn on the red carpet or to events during 2009.
- This year newcomers to the list include Dakota Fanning, Rose Byrne, Freida Pinto and Carey Mulligan.
- While Balmain was the label of the year only two Balmain dresses made the list. Versace was the highest ranking designer with four dresses making the top 50.
- Diane Kruger tops all other celebrities - making the list five times. And Michael Kors is the only designer to have the same dress make the list twice (just in different colours and on different women).
- Both Leighton and Blake made the list. But surprisingly Blake gets the higher position.
- And the winning dress this year is a lot more subtle than the previous winners (view 2007 and 2008), but I think it was the best this particular celebrity has looked in years. She was glowing.

Of course, all opinions differ, so please let me know what your favourite dresses were this year in the comments section.

Wow...so much!
Funny how Jennifer Aniston won when she dared to not wear her typical black dress...good on her!
I think my faves are Rachel McAdams in Pucci, Emma Watson in Burberry, Gwynth Paltrow in Donna Karen, Mary Kate in Balmain & Jennifer Connelly in Balmain

I love Eva in Christian Dior and Victoria Beckham in her own design (sometimes I get the impression she only designs for herself haha), this is an extremely thorough compilation, must've taken forever!!

This is such an amazing compilation - I always look forward to it! It must have taken sooo much work!!

I agree with you entirely on your number one choice. I'm not usually the biggest fan of Jennifer Aniston's dress sense but I was blown away by her in her white Valentino!

I really happy to see Jen on the top of the list. To me, it's not the best dress of 2009 but she's always beautiful and well-dressed.

awesome list! I had fun scrolling through that. Loved seeing Marion Cotillard (4) and Victoria Beckham (2) there.

Allegra said...

woww! I love them all! especially the two emma watson is wearing and the green one camilla belle is wearing!

Lula said...

not sure jen is the best dressed of the year, but i must admit she was really beautiful. i've missed more leighton meester, for me, she's been the big surprise of the year (almost every week she wears an amazing outfit), but i agree with you in jennifer connelly wearing that amazing balmain, maggie gyllenhaal and, in general, most of the list. i just really disagree with marion cotillard #4 and rose byrne #8.
by the way, this is an amazing job, keep doing it the next year!!

the only one i like is nr.2!

Love the list. Not sure is Drew Barrymore is pulling off the McQueen (but do love the dress, would have been amazing on a red head..). Diane Kruger in Christopher Kane gets double thumbs up from me. Not sure about Kate Hudson in Versace (it's a bit 'princess' for me, but good for the red carpet wow I suppose) but love love love Carey Mullign in Vionnet. You must have worked hard on this! I love best dressed lists, so thank you thank you, thank you.

Fab work again Coco! My top three have to be the bright pink Michael Kors dress that Blake Lively was shot in (No.32), Camilla Belle in Alexander McQueen (No.30) and Eva Mendes (No.7) in D&G...where was Penelope Cruz though for the nine premier, thought she look gorgeous

My favorites are Camilla Belle's mini and Kate Hudson looks gorgeous in the long gown. So pretty!

Great post! My favorites are #10, #18 and #19.

it's all wrong:D jennifer aniston shouldn't be the number one! there is so many who look more exciting than her, for example jennifer connelly in Balmain. and Rose Byrne in Marc Jacobs? Come on. She looks a bit like a rag doll with that awkward pose and messy hair

Delilah Winter Wolf said...

how many hours did this take you? good good job! i loved the burberry dresses!!

Kat said...

your 50 best dresses list always blows me away, coco, for the sheer effort and dedication you put into compiling it, so well done you!
marion cotillard's two dresses are my favorites and also kirsten dunst in rodarte and perhaps jennifer connolly in balmain

hippyhippychic said...

Great list, (as always) but shocked Ashley Olsen was missing! I loved her orange CFDA dress!

My favourites are #9 - that green Balmain dress was my most craved item of 09!

and #45 - so hot

i think that anne hathaway's armani dress at the golden globes was great and simply stunning! unfortunately, it didn't make the list. :(

i agree with all of them except 1,2,and 3 should all be at the bottom of the list!

Ooh love love love this. I have agree with your number one, mostly because it was such a drastic change from her usual black gown and simple hair.
But I did adore Emma Watson's dress to Burberry, Kirsten Dunst's Rodarte, & Blake Lively's Michael Kors so so so much!

I'm loving 48, 45, 43, 28, 25, 11 and 9. Most of the ones I like have origami-ish references. I'm figuring out right now that I love the chic simplicity of origami inspiration. Note to self.

Lovely list!

I love this post! My faves are 46, 31, 26 and 24. I'm glad Jen won, shes so not very edgy but she's sophisticated so does not get enough credit!

Wow, what a fabulous feature!! My favorites were Leslie Mann (for the bright yellow paired with the black- very striking, esp. with her blonde hair), Camilla Belle, Blake Lively (that hot pink photographs so well), Eve Mendes (love the styling and with the turquoise necklace it brought it to a whole other level ala Rachel Zoe), Kate Hudson, and Angelina (the simplicity was so elegant on her and brought out her natural beauty)! Loved looking at this compilation- great list!

iñaki said...

Brilliant, as always.
Although I was a bit surprised by number one. I would've put it back a few places... I can't imagine how horrible it was trying to decide the exact order!

That purple/blue dress on Cate Blanchett is such a stand out for me. I don't know if it should be so low on the list, and it's probably not an overall number one, but god I adore the colour and shape on her!

Ania said...

I loved 44 and 9, I just adore green dresses (probably because it's a colour I just can't seem to pull off ;). I always love the Miu Miu dress in the editorials, but it looks odd on Chloe, imo. + Gwyneth in that Donna Karan... stunning.

emily said...

emma watson in ossie clark should've been far higher - she looked incredible! that dress was the first time i've liked emma watson. and victoria beckham's black VB number was also magnificent - glad it rated so high. xx

Make Do Style said...

What a great selection - I love the breadth and diversity. 1, 2 and 3 are rightly so and yes to number 1 the Valentino couture is incredible and love that Jen beat Angelina!

Ooh, I love these kind of games.

I'm trying to be objective, and not go by my favourite people-who-I-haven't-actually-met, but I'm gonna have to go by my favourite designers who I haven't actually met, either: the two Chris's, Kane, and Bailey.

I'm tied between 29, 24, & 22.

I love this so much, I'm going to put this post link on my sidebar! (spotlight on)

Nice picks. Thandie Newton will always be a true star in my eyes - she dresses so well on the red carpets. So does Diane and Marion. But i don't agree on your number one. Jennifer Aniston does look beautiful in that dress and it's refreshing to see her in something else than black, BUT many others dress way better than her and have had greater looks on the carpets than her.

Like your new header btw. :)

The ones that stand out are the ones that Emma, Camilla, and Dakota wore. :)

i miss emma watson in christopher kane at the letterman show soo bad, but i suppose that it didn't count as a red carpet moment... ooohhh i love this list, though! great work!

P.S. the more i think about it the less i understand HOW is leighton in a lower position than blake!!! i mean, i find it creepy, but i totally agree with you that blake's dress is wooorlds better than leighton's one.

While I'm happy to see Angelina in this list, I wish you had included her Cannes high slit light pink dress as well.

Aniston? Really? She's so boring.

Love Emma Watson in Burberry though.

Maz aka PersephoneDisco said...

Coco! Why Aniston?! Well, you know how I feel about her ;)

I'm glad Diane made 5 appearances, I'm a lil saddened you missed out this beauty http://gofugyourself.celebuzz.com/go_fug_yourself/2009/03/fug_or_fab_diane_kruger.html#

Great job, such a great post!
