This morning I posted a gorgeous editorial from my ex-favourite magazine, American Harper's Bazaar. I am now about to bitch about their September issue. Normally I would hate to be so critical but I'm in a bad mood and I think you will all agree with what I am saying anyway.
Leighton Meester is on the cover. I had heard it would be Ashley Olsen and I am now relived it wasn't, because what they did to poor Leighton is terrible. She is supposed to be looking 'fabulous at every age' and they have photoshopped her to make her look older. Leighton looks fabulous at the age she is now (23), why not leave her that age and choose a fabulous 60-year-old to shoot as well as her?
The pictures of her looking older are just funny - click them to see larger size. Plus the clothes suck. I thought Anna Wintour was a bit OTT to ban black at Vogue, but now I get her point, these pictures filled with black clothes are so flat. Black clothes, white wall, fake old lady.... Why did they think this would work?
Even when Leighton was looking young the styling is still beyond boring. She is super pretty girl and there are tons of great new designers out there they could have styled her in instead of a office appropriate simple black dress.
In under seven minutes I managed to find clothes at Browns Focus that would have been much more fun to see Leighton wearing - even if it was just for her 'young' years.

And to make matters worse there is a Susan Boyle editorial in this issue too. Her makeover is actually very good though, she looks younger than Leighton at least...
What happened to the Harper's that produced stunning images like this? I miss it.

Oh dear God.. The Susan Boyle images are making me cringe - I mean just look at the one of her singing.. and yeah! When I started buying Harper's Bazaar US around 4 years ago it was so riveting, even just 2 years ago they always had fun editrials with Lily Donaldson and Caroline Trentini that I loved.

the images of her looking 'old' is the most ridiculous concept i've ever seen in a fashion magazine. i have no idea why anyone would think that would work! it's sad because leighton actually likes to experiment with fashion, so it would have been great to see something different and inspirational on her.

Ew. times like a million. The photography completely washes her out! She's gorgeous and they make her look plain! Not even interesting!
And seriously getting a 60 year old to pose would be a muchhh better idea.

That is probably one of the most hideous editorials I have ever seen. LOL. I am going to die.
it would have been better if they had given leighton some color and interesting cuts to work with but i think she looks great in the young pictures. the old pictures are strange...i can see where they are going, but they could have featured young leighton with another person who happened to be older and pretty and done an article on both of them and young vs. old style...
It is pretty bland. I'd like to see her in something a little more adventurous. That magazine ought to hire you as the stylist. I think Leighton would look great in these pieces.
The clothes you picked out are a million times better than what they've dressed her up in!

Boring as hell. It was pretty illuminating to see a pretty young actress at 60, but poor Leighton. Wonder what se thinks of it.

I do agree with you. if they wanted an older woman then they should choose someone older.
I think Leighton looks really good in the "young photos" but not in the "old photos". The first outfit in the old ones is alright, but the second is just hideous.
I never heard about the rumor that Ashley Olsen was going to be on Harper's Bazaar, though. The only rumor I heard was the one that she was gonna be on September issue of Marie Claire just like in 2007. And that rumor is true. Ashley looks really fabulous in that photoshoot! The interview (at least the part that's on the MC site) is very interesting. They did a great job, like two years ago.

Australian Harpers Bazaar was a total disapointment as well, too little fashion editorial content, too many ads and poor articles
i do have to say that its quite boring... i mean, she really is a young and hot gal, but why do they have to clown her into some 40-ish hag (sorry for the harsh words)...
but really, maybe they are trying to set a trend on getting woman to dress older than their age..

Susan Boyle looks stunning and radiant in comparison to Leighton as an older woman. WTF!?
How could they take a beautiful young woman and turn her into a haggard old lady. It's photography and "styling" at its worst.
Not a true fan of Leighton, and I must agree she doesn't even look her best in these shots!

I love Leighton's look in the jeans. She is SUCH a gorgeous girl, so I cannot believe THEY MADE HER LOOK OLDER! I don't even know where to begin with that. What were they thinking?! They could've done a perfectly gorgeous shoot with her, but the photoshopping to make her look older was just horrible!

Ohmygod, I know it drove me crazy, what kind of stupid idea was that? Her "older" self looks absolutely ridiciulous.
i honestly felt that they should have used different people of different ages to go with the fabulous at any age... i'd be a little upset to an older person and come across this shoot. i love leighton, though... at her current age :)
I love Susan Boyle! Hey women dont be so jealous that she is now famous because she deserves so. She is such an amasing singer, When I first heard her singing the song from Les Miserales oh my god! Just fanatstic! So please why dont you let her alone guys and she also seems so be a really nice person

Ahaah i am laughing out loud... The old leigthon images are LUDICROUS!! What were they thinking? Plus... I'm one of the few who couldn't care less about susan boyle - I always refused to whatch her on youtube and find her rather creepy!
I think they should hire me for HB ahaha I could def. do better then this!
